Ouderwets koken / Cooking the oldfashioned way

Since we're back from our vacation I'm watching my budget closely. By planning meals, making a lot from scratch and using cheap products I save a lot of money, which leaves me some money to spend on other things. Every week I take a fixed amount of money and I pay cash for everything, so I can see what I spend. What's leftover on the end of the week is divided in different parts; clothes/shoes/hairdresser for the kids, windowcleaners/charity, presents/unexpected, holidays, saving for fun things.
For cooking I use my old cookbooks a lot, the ones that I got from my grandmother and mother-in-law. There are real basic recipes in these.

While searching for cheap recipes I also discovered on youtube these clips by Clara. This woman is in her 90's and lived through the great depression in America. She shows what they were eating and how they were cooking during this period.  My favourite clip is the one in which she is making christmas cookies with two of her (adult) granddaughters. Outside it is starting to snow and in het kitchen it looks like it is warm and cozy. That would be some grandmother for me! I would want to become a grandmother like that one day too; the sort of grandmother that shows her grandchildren how to cook the "oldfashioned" recipes. I look into my old cookbook and see the recipe that has been cut out of a newspaper from 1931. My greatgrandmother cut that out. According to my mother she too lover to cook and bake. What a shame I didn't get to know her and, in her kitchen, could learn to cook and bake the recipes she had been making for years...
